Different emerging technologies are having a strong boost in the context of events such as the acquired importance of Web 2.0 applications, the reduction of equipment costs, or the strong penetration rate of mobile devices, among others. One of these emerging technologies is the so-called «extended reality» or «mixed» which will have a strong level of penetration into our educational centers and universities in a time horizon of 3 to 5 years. This article reviews the state of the art on the incorporation of extended reality in the different educational levels of teaching, focusing on its use in university training contexts; it analyzes what is understood as extended reality, augmented reality or mixed reality, and the didactic possibilities and limitations that studies and research have found regarding its use, with the aim of designing a theoretical framework from different theories that support their incorporation into the educational field.
